The following guide is intended for advanced operators, understanding TPLink routers is required or you may break your current/working configuration!

This guide provided as is, we don’t provide support for it.

Since Version 11 of TP Link 841N, configuration of this device has become more complex than the previous version. There is a workaround however, with which you can apply a v10 OpenWRT to the device. Below you will find a detailed explanation. Please be warned that by following these instructions you are likely to lose the warranty for your product. If steps are not followed properly, you might find your router unaccessaible or bricked. Please proceed with care and with your own resposibility.

1. Apply OpenWRT V11 to the router

First you need to use tftp to change the router’s factory firmware to that of OpenWRT. To do this, you need to use tftpd.

1.1 Please plug in on your router`s power supply and connect your computer`s LAN port to the Router`s LAN1 port.

1.2. Please download and install tftp32 or tftpd 64 to your computer. (32 or 64 depends on your PC. We used the software „tftpd by phi jounin” v 4.00 for this guide) Please also download „openwrt-ar71xx-generic-tl-wr841-v11-squashfs-factory.bin” from our website: http://www.hotspotsystem.com/firmware/openwrt/TP-LINK/tplink-tlwr841/

1.3 You need to set your PC’s IP address to a static one during the process. This has to be 192.168.0.66. (subnet mask is normally 255.255.255.0). For Windows, you need to go to Start Menu / Control Panel /Network and Sharing Center / Change adapter settings / Properties / TPC-IP Protocol v4 /

1.4 You need to find the downloaded „openwrt-ar71xx-generic-tl-wr841-v11-squashfs-factory.bin” firmware on your local computer’s drive and need to rename it to „wr841nv11_tp_recovery.bin”. Please leave it in the same folder. (It is the “Downloads” folder by default).

1.5. Open tftpd32 (or 64). Set the „Current directory” to your download directory (it should point to the folder where the firmware was downloaded to). In this example it shows as „C:\Users\x60\Downloads” but this might be different in your case. You can leave the „Server Interface” as it is by default. Do not close the application. You can follow the process soon to commence by clicking onto the Log Viewer tab.

1.6 You need to start router in tftp mode. To do this, please hold down the reset button while you press the turn on button and keep it being pressed until the „lock” LED turns to green. This completes the tftp section of this guide. You need to find similar message at the log view of tftpd as seen below. (Once the process is successfully finished, you may close tftpd.)

2. Revert OpenWRT v11 to v 10.

In order to have a graphical user interface to the router, the firmware has to be reverted to v10.

2.1 Please connect your router`s WAN port to the Internet and leave the PC – router cable connected.

2.2 You need to revert your PC back to get IP addresses automatically. Use 1.3 for reference and select: “Obtain IP address automatically”.

2.3 You need to use Putty to go through SSH. The IP address of the new firmware is 192.168.1.1, then click “‘Open” then “Yes” at the warning message. For “login as” use root (No password needed yet, please hit Enter).

2.4. Inside Putty, please run the following commands:

cd /tmp (Enter)
wget http://www.hotspotsystem.com/firmware/openwrt/TP-LINK/tplink-tlwr841/15.05.1-tl-wr841n-v10-sysupgrade.bin

(please wait while the v10 firmware is being downloaded)

sysupgrade -F -n 15.05.1-tl-wr841n-v10-sysupgrade.bin

Press Enter. this wil force-update the v10 firmware.

2.5 You need to wait approximately 2 minutes until the router reboots. The firmware change is complete. Please note that the new internal IP address of the router is 192.168.20.1. You may use the configuration setup of v10 from step 3 that can be found here: http://www.hotspotsystem.com/openwrt-hotspot-setup

In case you need some predefined custom dropdown input field on your splash page, using data capture feature, here is what you can do:
/Some HTML knowledge is required to do this modification/

– Use an existing custom skin, or create a new one. (our example is based on a fresh custom Responsive Skin)
– Set up your page to display the custom fields (we will modify the custom question number 1.)
– Locate the custom field part in the custom skin files you want to modify (in our case: main_modules_free_auto.inc.html)

We will modify this part of the code (related to Custom Question 1):

{CAPTURE_CUSTOM_1_REQ}{CAPTURE_CUSTOM_1_Q}

{RESPONSIVE_ERRORTEXT_051}

Originally this is a simple HTML input field. To make a dropdown version of the input field, we will have to change the input type to SELECT, and we will have to manually enter the OPTION fields.

After modifying to have 3 options of dropdown input field, our example code looks like this:

{CAPTURE_CUSTOM_1_REQ}{CAPTURE_CUSTOM_1_Q}

Please select one option
Option 1
Option 2
Option 3

{RESPONSIVE_ERRORTEXT_051}

3 3

Splash Page Analytics measures the page visits and activity on the hosted splash pages. It’s like Google Analytics on your splash pages. These are statistics of your visitors behavior BEFORE they log in to your hotspot (except for the success page which is displayed after they logged in).

How is a ‘unique visitor’ counted?

The number of unduplicated visitors coming to your splash pages. Every user is only counted once, even if he visits the splash pages multiple times a day.

Unique visitors are determined using first party cookies stored in your visitor browser. When a same person visits your splash pages on two different devices (for example their laptop and on their mobile phone) then it will detect two unique visitors.

If the visitor’s browser does not accept the analytics cookie (if they have disabled, blocked or deleted cookies), a simple rule of thumb is used to try to match the visitor to a previous visitor with the same features (IP, resolution, browser, plugins, OS, etc).

Note that by default, unique visitors are available for days, weeks and months periods, but unique visits are not processed for the “year” period for performance reasons.

How is a ‘visit’ defined?

If a visitor comes to your splash pages for the first time, or if he visits a page more than 30 minutes after his last page view, this will be recorded as a new visit. A Unique Visitor can make multiple Visits per day. In the first visit, the visitor is a New Visitor. From the second visit (the same day or later), a Unique Visitor is a Returning Visitor.

The following guide is intended for advanced operators, understanding Mikrotik routers is required or you may break your current/working configuration!
Also please note that all usage will be accounted for your first location – even those ones which happened/actioned on the second one.

This guide provided as is, we don’t provide support for it.

So you would like to have two hotspots on the same Mikrotik router? You can do that, but it requires a bit of a tinkering – here’s how you can set it up:

Create your first location and set it up following our Mikrotik Gateway Install Guide and verify if it works.

Create your second location and change the Internal Login and Logout URL’s to http://10.5.64.1/login and http://10.5.64.1/logout respectively

Copy the hotspot folder from the Mikrotik to your computer. Edit the login.html and alogin.html files: change the value=”$(identity)” to value=OPERATORUSERNAME_LOCATIONIDNUMBER of the second location. Save, then rename the hotspot folder on your computer to hotspot2, and copy the whole hotspot2 folder to the root of your Mikrotik or to the /flash/ folder if it’s present in your device.

Copy the following commands to a simple text editor and change the parameters to yours – in the first row depending on if you don’t have a flash folder on your Mikrotik you need to delete that and in the last row the OPERATORUSERNAME_LOCATIONIDNUMBER must be the set for the second location:

/ip hotspot profile add hotspot-address=10.5.64.1 name=hsprof2 html-directory=/flash/hotspot2
/ip pool add name=hs-pool-4 ranges=10.5.64.2-10.5.79.254
/interface vlan add name=vlan-10 vlan-id=10 interface=HS_bridge disabled=no
/ip dhcp-server add address-pool=hs-pool-4 disabled=no interface=vlan-10 lease-time=1h name=dhcp2
/ip hotspot add address-pool=hs-pool-4 disabled=no interface=vlan-10 name=hotspot2 profile=hsprof2
/ip address add address=10.5.64.1/20 comment="HotspotSystem network 2" interface=vlan-10 network=10.5.64.0
/ip dhcp-server network add address=10.5.64.0/20 comment="hotspot network 2" gateway=10.5.64.1
/ip firewall nat add action=masquerade chain=srcnat comment="masquerade hotspot network 2" src-address=10.5.64.0/20
/ip hotspot profile set hsprof2 use-radius=yes
/ip hotspot profile set hsprof2 login-by=http-pap,http-chap,https
/system scheduler add interval=1h name=up2 on-event="/tool fetch keep-result=no mode=http address=tech.hotspotsystem.com host=tech.hotspotsystem.com src-path=(\"up.php\\\?mac=\".[/interface ethernet get 0 mac-address].\"&nasid=\"OPERATORUSERNAME_LOCATIONIDNUMBER"&os_date=Mikrotik&uptime=\".[/system clock get time].\"%20up%20\".[/system resource get uptime].\",%20load%20average:%20\".[/system resource get cpu-load].\"%\")" policy=ftp,reboot,read,write,policy,test,password,sniff,sensitive start-date=jan/01/1970 start-time=01:00:00

And that’s it! If you check VLAN 10, you will see your second hotspot network, if you switch to your untagged network, it will be the first one.

1. Open the administrator control panel of the printer from a browser. (This process is described in detail in the user guide document of your printer) The login information is printer on the front page of the printer guide. Please copy the API key of the printer from the configuration page to a safe place, also make notes of the WIFI settings.

2. You need to download the HDDRawCopy1.10Portable.zip file and the newest firmware image fájl hotspotprinter_*.imgc from http://downloads.hotspotsystem.com/voucher_printer/ directory

3. Get the SD card out of the printer first. (Use the printer guide to see how to open the printer housing.)

4. Put it in a laptop or desktop computer. Connect an ethernet cable with DHCP service and internet access to the printer (printer document section 3/a)

5. Run the HDD Raw Copy software on the computer to write the image on the SD card. This will completely reset the printer settings and start it on defaults. You need to set the API key back from a browser. Then you need to power cycle the printer and it will sign in to us through the ethernet connection.

6. Then you can connect by a browser to the IP address of the printer it print out at the boot. The login information is printed on the front page of the printer guide. You can now set the wireless SSID / password for the printer. Then the printer should operate correctly.

Sometimes when a customer is trying use the hotspot, he/she gets a screen with the following message:

ACCESS IS BLOCKED

Access to the hotspot has been disabled by the administrator of the hotspot

There can be 2 reasons for this:

You set a restriction in the Control Center under Manage > Locations > click on name > Modify Hotspot Data > Set Default Limits > Restrict Free Accesses.

In this case the message for customer is completely normal as they are not allowed to get an other free access within the specified time frame.

The user was put to the blacklist so he was blacklisted, therefore he cannot use the hotspot.
