DD-WRT firmware is compatible with many routers, however not all can be used with our system. Check out this article to find out if your router can be used together with DD-WRT and our system.
All firmwares are compatible that contain the Chillispot or CoovaChilli module. Additionaly we support DD-WRT, OpenWRT (using our pre-built images only), RouterOS (Mikrotik), and Open-Mesh firmware.

Yes, it’s possible. You need to set the PPPOE parameters you got from the ISP in the hotspot router. If your ADSL modem is a router/modem combo, you can directly set the PPPOE parameters in the modem, and connect the hotspot router to it via DHCP.
Yes, you don’t have to run the system on a router. All you need to do is to install Coovachilli and set the chilli parameters manually. Coovachilli is an open source captive portal or wireless LAN access point controller. Binary downloads are available for Redhat, Febora, Debian, Mandrake and OpenWRT. Coovachilli is an ebuild in Gentoo and compiles under FreeBSD. Source code under GPL is available for other platforms.
Another option to operate a hotspot on a PC is to install RouterOS on it (its the operating system of Mikrotik routers but it can be installed to a PC). Please note that you need to have a Level 4 license or higher for hotspot functionality.

Basically you can use any 3G capable modem to connect to the internet, then you can connect an other router to it which is compatible with our system.

Yes, you can use our OpenWRT firmware however if you do this you will loose the management interface of Unifi.
We suggest to use a hotspot gateway in combination with the Unifi to keep Unifi’s management interface and use HotspotSystem together. Please check our case studies for more information.
For most of the supported routers the installation is easy and can be done via a web interface, so all you need is a web browser for the installation (it’s not OS dependent).
