Stuck With Post-Install Setup

    After following the setup guide for my router (Linksys WRT54GS V4 – DD-WRT v24-sp2 build 14311) and reading the knowledge base and forums, I'm still having problems.

    The Linksys/Hotspot is on my LAN as IP Address 192.168.0.5. ADSL access is via a D-Link modem/router on 192.168.0.2. My own in-house Wi-Fi is provided by an Apple Airport Extreme on 192.168.0.3 which also acts as DHCP server, allocating addresses between 192.168.0.180 and 192.168.0.190

    The yellow Cisco Systems lamp on the Linksys is illuminated and I received an email from HotspotSystem telling me my router was now correctly configured. But it is not working correctly.

    Many questions remain around points not covered in the HotspotSystem guide, specifically:

    1) How should the Linksys WAN connection be set – Auto/DHCP or one of the many alternatives? If an alternative, what other settings do I need to make?

    2) In the Linksys network setup I have subnet as 255.255.255.0, gateway as my ADSL modem/router's address and DNS as 8.8.8.8 Are these correct?

    3) How should the Linksys attach to the LAN. Through one of the four LAN ports on the back, or through the ethernet WAN port?

    4) Should the Linksys DHCP server be set to disabled as it is now?

    5) The HotspotSystem guide advises setting up a virtual interface for firmware builds 'after 18000'. As I have firmware 14311, I assume this is not necessary?

    6) I see an access point with the SSID 'Hotspotsystem-(myusername)-1'. I can connect wirelessly to this but it does not allocate an IP address so there is no connection through to the Internet, or to the splash page, or indeed to the Linksys Web management interface.

    7) I have a time server (time.nist.gov) setup in the Linksys but the management interface tells me the time is 'not available' EDIT – Time now displayed correctly.

    Any help would be much appreciated.

    1 you should set the linksys connect via cable WAN port -> lan on the Dlink.

    2 linksys dhcp: off (the clients will get the address from the radius part of the hotspotsystem)

    3. connect the linksys WAN via a cable to your primary routers LAN port.

    4. yes, disable DHCP on your hotspot router. it will pull an address from the hotspot radius system itself.

    5. dont bother. i didnt. leave the Services-> Hotspot -> ETHx how it is.

    6. this is what should happen. if you set the linksys WAN to go thru your primary router, it should start working (dhcp, splash page, website control panel custom commands). you can change the SSID later

    7. leave the time server alone. it needs to be set back to NONE and UTC like it was originally. very important. don't change anything. else you will get a sync error on the login page

    Also…….

    The router will almost 'autoconfigure' itself. you will notice that some settings will change on thier own. this is normal.

    do this:

    set your hotspot routers LOCAL ip address should be 192.168.20.1

    subnet 255.255.255.0

    gateway 192.168.0.2 or whatever your primary router is. this routes the hotspot routers local traffic out to the WAN

    configure the Operator ID and LocationID in Services- Hotspot

    check Logon splash screen option

    apply, save and let router reboot.

    wait 10 minutes. goto the hotspotsystem.com control panel and check your locations. if you see the router listed, then go grab a laptop and try to logon to the ssid. it should give you a 192.168.182.x DHCP address. now try to visit a web page. it should give you the splash screen.

    hope this helps, it took me 2 days to get it to work.

    ………………….now if only i could get my 2nd WDS router to hand off DHCP addresses to my clients………………

    Many thanks for your suggestions. I now see my router from the hotspotsystem.com control panel and it tells me all is OK. But I'm still not getting IP addresses allocated for wireless clients. Very frustrating…

    yes indeed. hang in there…

    find SPI firewall and disable it.

    are your clients getting 192.168.182.x dhcp addresses? or are they getting dhcp from the Lan side of the hotspot router? or even from the pimary normal router….

    turn off the hotspot routers LAN dhcp server….

    make sure hotspot routers WAN gateway is the ip of your first, normal router. ie 192.168.1.1

    there was one more thing but i dont remember. you are very close….

    ow, send it another ROUTER SETUP COMMAND FOR THIS LOCATION from the hotspotsystem.com control panel

    select Locations, click the location, then scroll down

    select all this crap

    DD-WRT v24 NoKaid/Standard/Mega/Special

    Set router's internal IP to: 192.168.20 .1

    Setup type: Single/First router at this location

    now comes the tricky part.

    i find that you have to be connected to the hotspot router thru a cable and network card. so you might have to change the LAN ip to access it via ethernet cable and LAN socket (192.168.1.1) reboot, login, send the command, reboot, change the ip back (192.168.20.1), reboot

    the router must also be connected to the internet.

    goto the Administration section and paste the new command in and run it.

    this should reactivate the router, but it has to be connected to the internet thru the WAN port as well to link up to the system at that time

    Yippee – got it to work! I followed your directions again but made one change – I altered the DHCP interface from the default (eth0) to eth1 and got an immediate connection and IP address and then was taken to the Hotspotsystem landing page.

    Time to get the rest of my system deployed now – 1Watt Wi-Fi booster, outdoor antenna and cabling.

    Once again I can't thank you enough for your patience and forbearance. 🙂
