Https Protocol Not Redirect To Login Page

  • Hi,

When i try to connect to https://www.google.com from browser nothing happens and the user not redirect to the login page. If i try with HTTP protocol (e.g http://www.google.com) the system redirect my browser to the login page succesfuly. Why this is happens? I am trying to find a solution on this

Captive portals on routers use http redirect. If an unauthenticated client requests a website, DNS is queried by the browser and the appropriate IP resolved as usual. The browser then sends an HTTP request to that IP address. This request, however, is intercepted by the router and forwarded to a redirect server. This redirect server responds with a regular HTTP response which contains HTTP status code 302 to redirect the client to the Captive Portal. To the client, this process is totally transparent. The client assumes that the website actually responded to the initial request and sent the redirect.

In case of https, interception is not possible, because it would break the security of the layer.

So in most cases it is not possible to redirect https request, however this can vary by the hardware and firmware you are using, some may allow this.

This was very clean answer thank you very much. At the end you said that some may allow this. Do you know any specific router or AP that can run dd-wrt + hotspotsytem and successfully redirect https requests to the login page?

    Thanks in advanced

I don't know any which handle this correctly at this time, sorry.

We have also set up a long range WIFI access point and as long as I use the linksys router we purchased from hotspotsystems. As long as we enter the network through the linksys antenna we are fine but as soon as we use the access points ( they are networked into the router via cat5) throughout the property we are wide open. How do we redirect to our page for login? laketexomalodge is our login

This is not related to the original topic and probably your firmware settings are not correct. I suggest to open a support ticket and send more information, even screenshots of the hotspot settings of your router.

this is a redirect problem. I am sorry you are incorrect. If entering from the lan it should also redirect you to the login page. It is setup for Lan and Wireless. Tehe way I see it everybody should be redirected to hotspotsystem website to login.

Tell me where you want me to ask this question along with not brodcasting the correct SSID and I will be happy to do it.
