Consoles (Xbox / Playstation) on hotspot

  • Hi everyone,

    first time poster.

    I have a location where we host hotspot from Hotspotsystem for our customers. Some customers would like to use playstation / xbox / chromcast on Hotspot subnet. The problem I see is that they will not be able to authenticate their consoles to allow them to be connected to the internet.

    Is it possible to use ie. ubiquiti picostation as client to hotspot, connect picostation to TP-link Archer C7 (WAN) and then have another subnet from the C7 router?

    I was hoping that the first user who authenticated on the seperate subnet would open up a connection for the WAN on the TP-link. That way the consoles connected to the C7s LAN ports could access internet without authenticating. But im unsure if this would work.

    Pros: wired clients without any means to authenticate through splashpage can access the internet
    Cons: in order for the wired clients to bypass splashpage a device would first need to authenticate.

    Topology:

    Hotspot:
    Ubiquiti Rocket M2

    <wireless connection> to:

    Picostation

    <wired connection>

    WAN input TP-link C7

    <DHCP>

    <Wired clients> and <Wireless clients>

    Would this work?

    Hi Richard,

    It could work.
    You can whitelist (http://help.hotspotsystem.com/knowledgebase/using-mac-authentication-macauth) the MAC address in the Rocket M2 in /etc/chilli/defaults for any device (C7 here) that has a NAT firewall (regular router mode). In this case it hides all devices behind and seems (from WAN) on its NAT only, and since you whitelist its MAC all devices get free internet from behind.

    Best,
    Steve Hars

    Thanks for the reply! I will check my various options and report back my findings 🙂

    I still would like to keep somewhat of control on who pays for their usage.. so whitelisting the MAC maaaay not be an viable option.
