Long Response Time On Dhcp Request – Ubiquity Nano Station W/5.5 Software

  • I have been monitoring DHCP response time with PRTG monitor. Response times are very long with an interesting pattern of response.

    First response is approximately 3000 ms. It will continue to respond at that interval for about an hour, then the response time decreases to about 2700 ms for an hour, then down to 2500 ms for about an hour, then down again to about 2250 ms for another hour. At that point, it pops back up to 3000 ms and the cycle repeats itself. Occasionally a peak higher or lower but that is the general cycle. The DHCP request interval is every 5 minutes. The monitor computer is connected with a cable, not wireless.

    Not much is happening on the network. I am pinging the router, three access points, and a camera (that is not broadcasting, only recording on motion). No change in behavior if I stop the other monitoring activities. No changes if/when I turn the other devices off and leave only the monitor and router on line. I have been observing this pattern for more than a week. Rebooting the router has no effect.

    I moved the monitor to a different network using a different router/DHCP (Allied Telesis AR2304). Response is consistent at 10 MS. Much larger network with dozens of devices including 7 IP cameras streaming HD continuously.

    Everything seems to work OK in the end. Every device that I connect eventually gets an IP address and connects. Just concerned that I may have some lingering problem that is going to rear it’s ugly head when I’m 200 miles away and can’t get on site.

    Thoughts or ideas on causes or solutions?

    This has never came up as a problem so far with our system. Actually the whole wireless access/ssid/hotspot process is quite long compared to even this 2-3s. So this is normal and do not affects the stability or reliability of the operation.

    It hasn’t surfaced as a problem (yet). Just thought this is oddly a long response time that has a very stable and repeatable pattern. Other routers that I tested are responding in 10 MS or less so to have a response time of 2-3 seconds seems excessive. I didn’t have a base line of the Ubiquity router before applying your software so I don’t have a comparative before and after test.

    That speed shouldn’t cause any problems for users because it’s still not a long time.
