United Christian Youth Camp Wifi Bridge

    As the camps Information Technology director I was challenged with the task of creating wifi hotstops for our guests across two campuses sharing one internet connection (which is also shared by our office and employees). Being a fundamentally christian demographic, we needed to make sure we could configure our routers so that our guests had to agree to our “terms and conditions” stating that they cannot use our internet connection to engage in illegal activities. We also had to be able to limit the users connection time and bandwidth usages so they don’t bog down our office network which relys heavily on a large throughput since we use VOIP technology for our phone and video conferences.

    The solution of course was HotspotSystem. At the splash page users are required to “agree” to our terms and conditions before they are connected to the internet. Also, their time is limited to 1 hr and the bandwidth is limited to 4Mbs download and 500Kbs upload (even though our connection is capable of 50Mbs download and 5Mbs upload).

    To spread our internet connection across the two campuses we use 4 buffalo high powered airstations (WHR-HP-GN-r). We also use two Luxul high gain (+/-15Db) omnidirectional antennas and two Luxul high gain (+/-20Db) directional antennas to bridge the two sites.

    The first router is connected to an omni antenna (to give signal to our office and first campus) and daisy chained to the second router, which is connected to a directional antenna. that directional antenna sprays the signal about 1/4 mile to the third router configured as a repeater to catch the signal also using a directional antenna. the third router is then daisy chained to the fourth router that is connected to the second omni antenna that spreads the signal around the other campus. Only the first router (using DDWRT firmware) needs to be configured to use HotspotSystem, since the other 3 routers pass through it. So now all of our guests are managed through HotspotSystem’s hotspot, and share our internet connection from our office.

    Hey Dan –
    I have a similar setup going here at our church in Holland Mi –
    I’ve been running into trouble linking our routers together to both distribute public wifi and an office wifi. Would you be willing to send screen shots of your settings on your main router and secondary router?
