Wired Ap's?

  • Is it possible to use wired APs (ex. WAP54G) with the OpenVPN HotSpotSystems package? I have a building with 3 wired APs going through a wrt54gl with openwrt (wifi turned off), but the clients wants more user usage stats like HSS does perfectly.

    I have the HSS OpenWRT package working perfectly on one WRT54GL, I’ve seen the info for WDS and using more WRT54GLs as APs but would rather not have to replace the current hardware if its workable.

    Yes. Wired or wireless, if they are behind the router with the hotspot service installed, they behave the same, and collect the same information.

    But probably you should not called it a wired AP, rather a wired HS

    not so sure it does. Just went through the basics.

    LAN – 192.168.244.1/24

    Gateway – WRT54GL 244.1 – SSID – HotSpot

    WAP54G AP – 244.2 static IP assignment, SSID = TEST1

    with the hotspot turned off I can connect to TEST and HotSpot, I get an IP in the 244.x range and everything works perfectly

    when i enable the hotspotsystem I can connect to SSID HotSpot and get a 182.x address, the proper login page and voila …. no issues

    however I can no longer connect to TEST and get an IP.

    So, is there a way to use wired linksys access point hardware like the wap54g with 1 router configured with the hotspotsystem?

    Well, wired and wireless still behave exactly identical, as mentioned.

    But indeed, the local 244 subnet will not be usable, as Coova will pull all traffic toward itself.

    It matches what you asked for though. Use the hotspot on wired.

    It seems you want something else. You want to continue to use the old network as is, without modified subnet, but still get HSS’s accounting results? Maybe I misunderstand. Can you try to re-explain?

    Current network setup – 3 WAP54GP Linksys Access Points wired to 1 Linksys WRT54GL running Tomato Firmware. The wrt54gl is the gateway with wifi TURNED OFF (because it sits in a steel lined telco room) acting strictly as a router using QOS and access restriction for a public library. Each WAP54GP has a static IP and a different SSID but everything is on the same class C of 192.168.244.1 with DHCPD servivng IPs 192.168.244.100-250 off of the wrt54gl.

    Works great, all DHCP assignments are from the wrt54gl but the EU wants to know how many connections per day and individual usage statistics for each user. HSS does this so perfectly I thought I could just replace the gateway router but it does not work with the 3 Access points spread throughout the library since the 244.x network is not being used by HSS

    Please let me know if you need further clarification on something, I’d love to have this working this week for them. I thought maybe I could switch the AP’s to DHCP but that didn’t work

    Ok, so if you replace the GL by a HSS router, and connect the 3 AP wired, the HSS will work, through the AP.

    Its true that the subnet used will now be 182, and as a consequence you will not be able to reach the AP’s themselves anymore, but you should still be able to connect to the HS through them, because the AP’s work on MAC level, not on IP level. Provided of course that they are true AP’s, and do not also route or firewall anything.

    If you need to do maintenance to the AP’s, just take a laptop and also wired it with a hardcoded 244, so you can reach the AP’s

    It definitely does not work when using a WAP54G using the method above. works fine until I apply the hotspot setup command from the website then only the wrt54gl will accept clients
